Chewbacca or "Chewie" is a fictional character in the Star Wars franchise, portrayed by Peter Mayhew. Chewbacca, a 200-year-old Wookiee, becomes Han Solo's companion after Solo, then an Imperial officer, refused an order to kill him, for which Solo was dismissed from the Imperial Navy and became a smuggler. To repay this debt, Chewbacca protected Han Solo for the rest of his life. His weapon of choice is the Wookie bowcaster (a crossbow-shaped directed-energy weapon).[4] Chewbacca was named one of the "greatest sidekicks" in film history by Entertainment Weekly.[5]

Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise centered on a film series created by George Lucas. The film series has spawned a media franchise outside the film series called the Expanded Universe including books, television series, computer and video games, and comic books. These supplements to the film trilogies have resulted in significant development of the series' fictional universe. These media kept the franchise active in the interim between the film trilogies.
